Route Overview

The Lemosho route is a classic trail that has gained much popularity in recent years. And deservingly so: it offers amazing views, a great acclimatization profile, and some of the highest summit success rates among all routes.

Starting on the western slope of Kilimanjaro, the Lemosho route is available in 2 itineraries: 7, and 8 days on the mountain. One of Lemosho’s highlights is the Cathedral Peak – one of the highest points of the Shira Volcano (3872 m).  One of the greatest paths for acclimatization is the Lemosho route. This less-travelled path offers stunning views as it ascends to the Shira Plateau.

Because buffalo, elephants, and other species live in the forests around the Lemosho Glades, this route is one of the few where groups may be escorted on the first day by an armed ranger.

Eight days Among the highest success percentages is Lemosho. The extra days let your body adjust to the higher altitude, lessening the symptoms of altitude sickness and providing you with more time to recover before making the summit attempt.

Detailed Itinerary

Elevation: 2389 m (7838 ft) to 2785 m (9137 ft)
Altitude gain: 396 m

A three-hour drive from Moshi will take you through welcome hillside towns to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. We will calmly wait for our licenses to be obtained, watching the hustle and bustle of operations as several workers prepare for the journey ahead. Enjoy the gorgeous rainforest views and winding trails while your guide informs you about the area's flora, fauna, and wildlife. At lower levels, the trail can be muddy and slippery. We strongly advise using gaiters and trekking poles here.

Elevation: ranges from 2785 m/9137 ft to 3504 m/11,496 ft, with an
Altitude: rise of 719 m.

After a nice night's sleep and a healthy breakfast, we emerge from the rainforest and continue on a climbing path. We leave the jungle behind, and the trail climbs slowly with expansive views to the rim of the Shira Plateau. Temperatures start to plummet.

Elevation range: 3504m/11,496ft to 3895m/12,779ft
Altitude gain: 391 m

We spent a full day exploring the Shira plateau. It is a moderate hike east toward Kibo's glaciated peak, across the plateau, to Shira 2 camp amid moorland meadows along a stream. Then we go to Moir Hut, a little-used spot at the foot of Lent Hills. Lent Hills offers a range of walks, giving it an ideal acclimatization opportunity. Shira is one of Earth's tallest plateaus.

Elevation: 3895 m (12,779 ft) to 3986 m (13,077 ft)
Altitude gain: 91 m

Although you finish the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is critical for acclimatization. From the Shira Plateau, we continue east over a ridge, passing the junction to the Kibo peak before heading southeast towards the "Shark's Tooth" Lava Tower (elev. 4650m/15,250ft). Shortly after the tower, we reach a second fork, which leads to the Arrow Glacier. We next continue our descent to Barranco Camp, where we will stay tonight.

Elevation: 3986 m (13,077 ft) to 4034 m (13,235 ft)
Altitude gain: 48 m

After breakfast, we continue up a high slope to the difficult Barranco Wall, which leads to the Karanga Valley and the connection with the Mweka Trail. This is one of the most spectacular days to witness your crew's power, agility, and strength as they appear to glide over this wall with ease. Stay overnight at Karanga Camp.

Elevation: 4034m/13,235ft to 4662m/15,295ft
Altitude gain: 628m

We continue up toward Barafu Camp, and once there, you have finished the South Circuit, which provides amazing views of the peak from many different perspectives. We'll eat early and get some rest before summit night. Overnight in the Barafu Camp.

Elevation: 4662 m (15,295 ft) to 5895 m (19,341 ft)
Altitude gain: 1233m
Descent to 3106m/10,190ft
Altitude loss: 2789 m

Excitement grows as daylight approaches, with an early start between midnight and 2 a.m. This is the most mentally and physically hard part of the journey.

We continue our journey to the top between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, attempting to stay warm while focusing on the incredible sense of success that awaits us. With a switchback motion in a northwesterly direction, rise across hard scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. During your brief stay here, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise. Faster hikers may see the sunrise from the summit. From here, on your remaining one-hour hike to Uhuru Peak, you are

Congratulations! One step at a time, you have now reached Uhuru Peak, the highest peak on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa!
After photos, celebrations, and even a few tears of pleasure, we take time to appreciate this wonderful accomplishment. We continue our long descent to Mweka Camp, pausing at Barafu for lunch and a quick respite. We strongly advise using gaiters and walking poles in difficult loose gravel and volcano ash terrain. You'll get some well-deserved rest before enjoying your final evening on the mountain. Overnight stay at Mweka Camp.

Elevation: 3106m/10,190ft to 1633m/5358ft
Altitude loss: 1473 m

After breakfast and a touching ritual of gratitude and team bonding with your crew, it's time to say farewell. We continue down to the Mweka Park Gate to get your summit certificates. Because the weather is significantly warmer, the terrain is damp, muddy, and steep, and we strongly advise Gaiters and trekking poles.

A van will meet you at Mweka village and transport you back to your hotel in Moshi (approximately 30 minutes). Enjoy a long-awaited hot shower, food, and celebration!!

Overnight at The Bristol Cottages B&B before being transferred to your next destination, whether it's home, safari, or Zanzibar.
