    Overview of the Machame route

The Machame Route, also known as the "Whiskey Route," is one of the most popular and scenic trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Renowned for its diverse landscapes, the route takes trekkers through lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and up to the arctic summit. You will enjoy hiking through all five climatic zones of Kilimanjaro, and marvel at the alien-looking Dendrosenecio kilimanjari – truly unique plants that are not found anywhere else in the world. Machame is favored by those seeking a more challenging and visually rewarding climb.

The route is typically completed in 6 or 7 days, allowing for better acclimatization and a higher success rate compared to shorter routes like the Marangu Route. Trekkers enjoy panoramic views, dramatic ridges, and the famous Barranco Wall, making Machame a favorite for adventure seekers and photographers alike. Learn more about training for Kilimanjaro to prepare for this challenging trek.

The Machame Route is ideal for those with some hiking experience and a good level of fitness, offering both a physical challenge and an unforgettable journey to Africa’s highest peak. See how Machame stacks up against the other six trails in our Kilimanjaro route comparison guide.

    Expert recommendation

Machame is a classic and highly recommended route. Its varied scenery, challenging profile, and excellent acclimatization opportunities make it a top choice for adventurous trekkers.

The Machame Route is available in 6- and 7-day itineraries. Here’s how to choose:

    6-Day Itinerary

Best for experienced hikers who are well-acclimatized to altitude. The 6-day option is more physically demanding, with less time for acclimatization, but is suitable for those with prior high-altitude trekking experience.

    7-Day Itinerary

Recommended for most trekkers, the 7-day Machame itinerary allows for better acclimatization and increases your chances of reaching the summit. The extra day helps your body adjust to the altitude, making the trek safer and more enjoyable.

This is the most popular option for Machame and is ideal for those who want a balance of challenge and success rate.

As you can see, the Machame route 7-day itinerary has a significantly higher summit success rate than its 6-day variation. In fact, Machame 7 is among the best itineraries for this metric. On the third day, it converges with the Lemosho and Umbwe routes, continuing to the summit as one route. Overall, it's a great choice for both beginners and experienced trekkers.
