What is Mount Kilimanjaro?
Mount Kilimanjaro is a free-standing volcanic massif in north-eastern Tanzania, rising dramatically from the surrounding savannah plains to 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level. It is the highest peak on the African continent and, remarkably, one of the world's highest free-standing mountains, unattached to any mountain range.
The mountain is composed of three distinct volcanic cones, Kibo (the summit), Mawenzi, and Shira, formed over millions of years by volcanic activity along the East African Rift. While Shira and Mawenzi are extinct, Kibo remains dormant with active fumaroles inside its caldera.
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, Kilimanjaro National Park protects the mountain and its extraordinary ecosystems, spanning five ecological zones from lush rainforest to glaciated arctic summit. For climbers, it represents the most accessible of the world's seven summits, requiring no technical mountaineering skills yet demanding excellent physical preparation and proper acclimatization.

The Three Volcanic Cones
Kilimanjaro is not one peak but a massif of three separate volcanoes formed over millions of years, each with its own character and history.

Kibo
5,895 mThe highest and youngest of the three cones, Kibo is a dormant shield volcano last active around 360,000 years ago. Its summit caldera (2.4 km wide) holds the famous Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. The cone still emits fumarolic steam and sulphur, indicating residual volcanic activity. Kibo's glaciers, though rapidly retreating, are some of the most iconic sights on the continent.

Mawenzi
5,149 mMawenzi is the second highest peak and the most dramatically jagged. Heavily eroded by millions of years of glaciation, it consists of steep rock faces and pinnacles. Its highest point, Hans Meyer Peak, is a challenging technical climb requiring full mountaineering equipment. The Saddle, a high moorland plateau at 4,300 m, separates Mawenzi from Kibo and is traversed on the Rongai and Northern Circuit routes.

Shira
3,962 mShira is the oldest and lowest of the three cones, having collapsed inward roughly 500,000 years ago. Today it forms the vast Shira Plateau, one of the world's highest plateaus at over 3,800 m. The plateau is an otherworldly landscape of moorland, giant lobelias, and volcanic rock formations. Climbers on the Lemosho and Shira routes spend their first highland night here, offering clear views toward Kibo.

Five Ecological Zones
Climbing Kilimanjaro is like travelling from equatorial Africa to the Arctic in a matter of days. The mountain spans five dramatically different ecological zones, each with distinct flora, fauna, temperature, and rainfall patterns.

Cultivation Zone
800 – 1,800 mThe lower slopes are heavily farmed by local Chagga communities, coffee, banana, and maize plantations thrive in the fertile volcanic soil. This band sees the most rainfall on the mountain.
Montane Forest
1,800 – 2,800 mDense rainforest draped in mosses, ferns, and epiphytes. Home to colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, elephants, and over 180 bird species including the Kilimanjaro white-eye. Rainfall averages 2,000 mm annually here.
Heath & Moorland
2,800 – 4,000 mOpen moorland dominated by giant heathers (Erica arborea), everlastings (Helichrysum), and the iconic giant groundsel (Dendrosenecio kilimanjari). Temperature swings are extreme, warm days, freezing nights.
Alpine Desert
4,000 – 5,000 mA harsh, barren environment with thin air, intense UV radiation, and little plant life. Only hardy mosses, lichens, and occasional tussock grasses survive. This zone sees very little rainfall, under 200 mm per year.
Arctic Summit Zone
5,000 – 5,895 mThe summit zone is an icy, near-airless world. Glaciers cover parts of the caldera and crater walls. Oxygen at the summit is roughly 40–50 % of sea-level concentration. No permanent plant life exists at this altitude.

History of Kilimanjaro
Volcanic origins
The massif begins forming through repeated volcanic eruptions along the East African Rift System.
First Western sighting
German missionaries Johannes Rebmann and Johann Ludwig Krapf become the first Europeans to report the snow-capped mountain. Their accounts were initially ridiculed in Europe.
First summit ascent
Hans Meyer (German geographer) and Ludwig Purtscheller (Austrian mountaineer) reach Uhuru Peak on October 6, 1889, the first recorded summit of Kilimanjaro.
The Uhuru Torch
On the eve of Tanzanian independence (December 9, 1961), Julius Nyerere's government lit the Uhuru (Freedom) Flame at the summit, symbolising freedom and hope for Africa.
UNESCO World Heritage
Kilimanjaro National Park (established 1973) is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding natural beauty and biological diversity.

Planning
Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro
Timing your climb correctly dramatically affects summit success, comfort, and crowd levels.
January – March
ExcellentOne of the two prime seasons. Cold and clear at the summit. Less crowded than the July–August peak. Excellent sky visibility, great for photography. Nights are bitterly cold but days are bright and sunny.
June – October
Best (Peak)The main climbing season. July–August are the busiest months. Warm, dry, and clear conditions make this the most popular window. Expect more climbers on the mountain, especially on Machame and Lemosho routes.
April – May
AvoidThe long rainy season. Heavy rainfall makes trails muddy and slippery, visibility is poor, and summit success rates drop. Most operators do not recommend climbing during this period.
November
AvoidShort rainy season. Similar conditions to April–May but shorter. Some climbers attempt November with lower expectations. December can be good only in the late part of the month.


Nature
Wildlife & Flora on Kilimanjaro
Despite its reputation as a trekking peak, Kilimanjaro hosts an extraordinary range of wildlife and endemic plant species across its ecological zones.

Primates of the Forest Zone
The rainforest belt (1,800–2,800 m) is home to black-and-white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys. You'll often hear their calls echoing through the canopy on the first day of most routes. Olive baboons and bushbabies are also present.

180+ Bird Species
Kilimanjaro is a birding paradise. Notable species include the Kilimanjaro white-eye (endemic), Hartlaub's turaco, silvery-cheeked hornbills, crowned eagles, and sunbirds. The forest zone hosts the greatest diversity, but raptors are spotted as high as 4,500 m.

Endemic Plants
The moorland zone features plants found nowhere else on Earth, giant groundsel (Dendrosenecio kilimanjari), giant lobelias (Lobelia deckenii), and everlasting flowers (Helichrysum). These ancient-looking plants are perfectly adapted to extreme altitude temperature swings.

Larger Mammals
Elephants and buffalos roam the lower forest slopes, occasionally crossing trekking paths (especially on Rongai and Northern Circuit). Leopards and spotted hyenas are resident but rarely seen. At high altitude (4,000+ m), eland, Africa's largest antelope, are sometimes encountered on The Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo.
Leave No Trace
Kilimanjaro National Park enforces strict Leave No Trace principles. Feeding wildlife is prohibited, plastic bags are banned in Tanzania, and all waste must be carried out. Plants may not be picked and off-trail walking is not permitted in sensitive zones.

How Difficult is Kilimanjaro?
Kilimanjaro requires no ropes, ice axes, or technical mountaineering skills, but it is far from easy. The primary challenge is altitude. At 5,895 m, the air contains roughly 50% less oxygen than at sea level. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the main reason people fail or turn back.
Recommended Fitness Preparation
- ✓ Hike 3–4 times per week for at least 3 months before the climb
- ✓ Include long hikes of 6–8 hours carrying a daypack (10–15 kg)
- ✓ Add stair climbing and incline treadmill training
- ✓ Build cardiovascular endurance, cycling, running, swimming
- ✓ Consider a shorter acclimatization hike (e.g. Mount Meru) beforehand

How to Get to Kilimanjaro
Fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
JRO is the main entry point, located between Moshi (45 min) and Arusha (1 hr). Most international travellers connect via Nairobi (NBO), Addis Ababa (ADD), Doha (DOH), Dubai (DXB), or Amsterdam (AMS). Airlines include Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways, and KLM.
Airport Transfer to Moshi
Masatu Tours provides free airport transfers for all booked climbers. Private vehicles from JRO to Moshi take approximately 45 minutes. Shared shuttles are available from the airport and from Arusha bus stations.
Pre-Climb Stay in Moshi
Most climbers arrive 1–2 days before the climb to acclimatize at 900 m altitude and prepare gear. Moshi offers a wide range of accommodation from budget guesthouses to boutique hotels with views of Kilimanjaro on clear mornings.
Transfer to the Trailhead
On day one, your guide team collects you from the hotel and drives to the route gate. Machame Gate (1,800 m) is 35 km from Moshi. Lemosho Gate (2,100 m) is 95 km away. Transfers are included in all Masatu Tours packages.
