Visa & Passport requirements

All tourists to Tanzania wishing to climb Kilimanjaro must have a passport that is valid for at least six months after their entrance date. Your passport should have at least one empty page for official stamps.

Check your passport well in advance of your trip, in case you need to renew it.

Tanzania Visitor Visa

Most international visitors are needed to get a visa for admission into Tanzania, with certain exceptions. The visa does not necessarily have to be obtained prior to arrival; it might be issued at the port of entry.

In general, all tourists from non-Commonwealth nations require a visa for admission, unless your country has an agreement with Tanzania that waives this requirement.

Visitors from various Commonwealth nations do not require a visa to enter, although nationals of the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, India, the United States, Canada, and most EU countries are not exempt.

Some passengers prefer to organise their visas beforehand, which they may do by calling the Tanzanian embassy in their home country. The embassy usually asks you to send in your passport, an application form, and passport images for processing.

Can you Get a Tanzania visa on Arrival?

To prevent lost passports or visa delays, it’s generally best to simply acquire a visa on arrival. Depending on the time of year, visa issuance lines might be rather long, although it is usually swift and trouble-free.

So how do you get a Tanzania visa?

Visas can be obtained at the following entry points to the United Republic of Tanzania:

  • Dar Es Salaam International Airport
  • Zanzibar International Airport
  • Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
  • Namanga Entry Point (Tanzania-Kenya boarder point)
  • Tunduma
  • Sirari
  • Horohoro
  • Kigoma port

At the time of writing, the current Tanzania visa fees (purchased upon arrival) are:

  • US Citizens: $100 (Multiple entry) for one year
  • Non-US Citizens: $50 (Single entry) for six months
  • Non-US Citizens: $100 (Double entry) for six months

These fees will need to be paid in cash, and you’ll need a clean page in your passport for the stamp.

What are the  Tanzania Entry Requirements?

Yellow Fever Vaccination Card

If you are arriving from a country at risk of yellow fever (even if you have had a layover), you must provide your Yellow Fever Vaccination Card.

Proof of Return or Continued Journey
As a tourist, you will most likely be requested to produce documentation of your onward or return ticket out of Tanzania, so have that information available (a printout is preferable) until you arrive.

Proof of Sufficient Funds

You must have enough money to maintain yourself throughout your stay in Tanzania and be prepared to provide documentation if required. This is not a common request from an immigration officer, but it does happen.

We highly advise you to verify your visa requirements well ahead of your travel to prevent avoidable delays.

Remember to check the visa requirements for any other countries you want to visit or transit through.
