Guide to success

Our advisors will tell you “pole, pole,” which means “slowly, slowly” in Swahili. Even if you believe you can go faster, the best approach to acclimate is to walk gently and within your fitness zone to avoid putting your body under unnecessary effort.

Hydration is essential for proper acclimatisation; pack 2 litres of water daily to consume it throughout your day’s journey. Drinking enough fluids at breakfast and dinner is also helpful. You will see why we recommend a “pee bottle” as a “must have” piece of equipment to prevent you from having to de-tent during the night and conduct a toilet visit when it’s chilly and pitch black outside!

Before you begin, make sure you are as physically fit as possible to ensure that you enjoy the journey rather than finding it difficult. Furthermore, the fitter you are, the less likely you are to subject your body to strain and stress.

Make sure you have the appropriate Kilimanjaro gear and have tried and tested everything prior to the journey to verify that it works and performs properly and that you are as comfortable and confident as possible. Don’t wait until summit day to see if your headlamp works or day one of the hike to test out your new walking boots.
