    Overview

    Overview of the Rongai route

The Rongai Route is the only trail on Mount Kilimanjaro that approaches from the north, near the Kenyan border, offering a unique perspective and drier climate. Known for its peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere with significantly fewer trekkers than southern routes, Rongai provides stunning views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks through diverse terrain from forest to alpine desert.

Available in 6- or 7-day itineraries (the 7-day option offers better acclimatization), the Rongai Route is ideal for those seeking a quieter, more remote Kilimanjaro experience, particularly during wetter months when the northern slopes receive less rainfall. See how Rongai compares with the other trails in our complete Kilimanjaro route guide.

    Peaceful & uncrowded

Ten times fewer trekkers than southern routes for a serene experience.

    6 & 7 day options

The 7-day option offers better acclimatization for higher summit success.

    Expert recommendation

    Expert recommendation

Rongai offers a peaceful, scenic climb from the north. It's known for having fewer crowds, a drier climate, and stunning views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

    6-Day Itinerary

The 6-day itinerary is a beautiful challenge, but it is suitable only for those who already have strong experience in high-altitude trekking or who have arrived with prior acclimatization.

    Best choice

    7-Day Itinerary

Our recommended option for most climbers. If you are a beginner or do not have recent experience at high altitude, choose the 7-day itinerary. That extra day gives your body the time it needs to adjust, creating a significantly better acclimatization profile.

    Best for solitude

Choose Rongai if you prefer a quieter trail with fewer crowds, drier conditions, and a unique northern approach offering spectacular wilderness scenery.

Everything you need to know about climbing the Rongai route

Both the Rongai and Machame routes offer 7-day itineraries with excellent acclimatization profiles, and both approach Kilimanjaro from different directions, Rongai from the quiet northern side, Machame from the busier southern slopes. Rongai is generally considered a bit easier overall due to its more gradual ascent and fewer crowds. Machame is known for its stunning scenery and the "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization principle. Both routes culminate in a midnight summit push from high camp and descend via the Marangu route (Rongai) or Mweka route (Machame).
